How to Write a Clear IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay

⚡ TL;DREssay clarity comes from three things: a logical structure (introduction → body → conclusion), well-developed paragraphs (topic sentence → explanation → example), and precise language. The clearest essays make one point per paragraph and connect each paragraph back to the thesis.

The Foundation: Paragraph Structure

Every body paragraph should follow the PEEL pattern:

  • P — Point: Your topic sentence states the main idea of the paragraph.
  • E — Explain: Explain why this point matters or how it supports your thesis.
  • E — Example: Provide a concrete example, statistic, or illustration.
  • L — Link: Connect back to your thesis or transition to the next paragraph.

Planning Before Writing

Spending 5 minutes planning saves time and dramatically improves clarity. Before you write, decide:

  1. What question type is this? (This determines your structure.)
  2. What is my position? (State it in one sentence.)
  3. What are my 2–3 main points? (One per body paragraph.)
  4. What example supports each point?
