An introduction to IELTS speaking part 3

In this post, we will be looking in-depth at part 3 of the speaking test.

The IELTS Speaking Test lasts 11-14 minutes.

The test has three parts, where you are interviewed by a trained examiner. You are not allowed to use a dictionary during the test. IELTS Academic and IELTS General students take the same test and it is marked in the same way.

PART 3 INFORMATION

Part 3 = 3-4 minutes – A conversation between you and the examiner.

The examiner will lead the conversation by asking general questions, which relate to the topic/cue card used in part 2.

The questions asked will encourage you to share your thoughts, feeling and opinions. You are scored on your use of English, not on your general knowledge or opinions.

Part 3 Questions

Part 3 questions may seem difficult to answer, as they are less personal than questions in parts 1 and 2, they are more about society or the country as a whole. You should concentrate on giving your opinions and not worry so much about supporting them with facts.

Here is an example of a cue card question from part 2, followed by a part 3 question;

Part 2 Question

Describe one of your favourite possesions.

Part 3 Question

What kinds of objects do you think give status to people in your country?

Model Answer (High Level)

Personally, I think many people want to have the latest iPhone or other expensive gadgets to show off their status in society. Depending on the personal wealth of the individual, they may show their status through really expensive items, like cars, private planes or super yachts. In my country, it is quite common to see people wearing expensive clothes, using the latest gadgets and driving expensive luxury cars. it is also quite common in the summer months to see many yachts and super yachts. So in my opinion, luxury items seem to give prestige to some in my country.

Expressing Opinions

When giving your opinion, you can use the following idioms and structures;

  • Personally. I think that…..
  • In my opinion, I believe that……
  • As far as I’m concerned…….
  • If you ask me…….
  • In my view…..
  • In my experience……..
  • I strongly believe that……..
  • I have often felt that………

Try answering the following part 3 questions >>

Q. Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?

Q. Which are more popular in your country: fast food restaurants or traditional restaurants? Why do you think that is?

Q. Some people say that food in an expensive restaurant is always better than food in a cheap restaurant – would you agree?

Think about the points below when you are answering;

  • Allow your ideas to flow naturally.
  • Use linking words and phrases.
  • Use phrases that let the examiner know that you are expressing your opinion (see above).
how to express your opinion in IELTS speaking

Giving An Example

When you give your answer, include a specific example to gain more marks. You can mention something from your own personal experience, or something you have read about etc. You do not have to go into as much detail as you would for a part 2 answer, but a specific example can make your answer a high-level response

Part 3 Question

Q. How should we educate children to protect the environment?

Model Answer (High-Level)

There are a number of ways that children can understand how to preserve the environment. For example, in school, they may complete projects where they have to clean up beach areas or learn about protecting animals. My friend teaches at a school and her students often organise beach litter collections. They remove waste from the beach, especially plastic bags and bottles, which can harm sea life, birds and other creatures. They do this as part of their environmental study programme.

Advantages / Disadvantages Questions

Common questions in part 3 look at both sides of an argument. You may see an advantage/disadvantage question, where you can bring your own personal experiences to be used as examples.

Part 3 Question

Q – What are the advantages and disadvantages of working in an open plan office space?

Model Answer (High-Level)

One of the benefits of working in this way is that you can easily talk to your colleagues. You can share ideas quickly and find out information without having to send a message or an email. In my opinion, working in an open plan office has the main disadvantage of being very noisy. This can affect your concentration levels, as the noise will distract you from your work. I used to work in an environment like this, which was very distracting and I found it so hard to concentrate. From my point of view, I think that there are more disadvantages to working in this type of environment.

Expressing more than one view

The examiners give high marks to those who can structure their answer well and use terms like; firstly (or first of all), secondly (second of all), thirdly and lastly. Similar to how you may structure a writing task answer, you can lead the examiner through your points using these linking words.

Part 3 Question

Q – What advantages do universities bring to society?

Model Answer (High Level)

In my opinion, going to university can bring many benefits to society, first of all, it can train people to have specialist knowledge that can benefit all, for instance, doctors, lawyers and architects. Secondly, when you learn specialist skills at university, you also learn how to interact with other people and work together. Lastly, having a skilled workforce can make both society and its systems better and continually striving to improve.

Linking Words

Using linking words and phrases will improve your band score, making your answer more coherent and natural.

Linking Words

I Don’t Know The Answer

What should you do if you don’t know the answer? Think about someone else’s opinion or something you have read about and form an opinion quickly. You can say something like “I have never really thought about that to be honest” to buy yourself some time while you think of what to say. You could also use one of the following sentences;

  • Speaking off the top of my head….
  • I’ve never given that much thought…..
  • I don’t have much of an opinion on this, because…..
  • I’m not really the right person to ask about this, because……

You need to show the examiner your use of English at a high level, not how impressive your opinions are, so by being honest and then discussing the question, you can expand and give your answer, for example;

Part 3 Question

Q – How do you think people will travel in the future?

Model Answer (High Level)

I’ve never given that much thought really! If I have to imagine what it will be like, I think that maybe some forms of travel will become more luxurious and more expensive. For example, flights might become more expensive if some of the aeroplanes are made into luxurious cabins, with private areas for passengers. This could also happen on trains, with passengers able to buy more expensive tickets for their own cabin or fancy seating area. The next generation of travel may become very high end and extravagant for those who want it.

What do you think of the answer? Even if you make something up, you need to show the examiner you have used English well to deliver your answer.

Model Answer

I’d like to talk about a restaurant that I have visited with my family that is close to our hearts, as it is owned by close friends of my husbands family. This restaurant is a traditional Greek restaurant that is located right on a beach and built overlooking the sea. It is in such a beautiful location that it is very popular with both locals and tourists on the island where I live.

I have visited this restaurant with my family many times before and we return regularly to eat there. They serve all kinds of fresh fish and traditional Greek dishes. My favourite dish is the kokkinisto, which is beef cooked in a red wine sauce, served with rice or potatoes. My husband also enjoys this dish, but he prefers to order the fresh fish, which is usually caught by his friend who works there and is also one of the local policemen. They have an abundant supply of fish, crab, squid and shellfish, they also have a fish pool there, where they keep a supply of sea bream and tanks with lobsters.

This restaurant has a very special place in our hearts because it is where I got married. Friends and family came together to transform the restaurant into a beach side paradise for our wedding celebrations. The food that they served during the wedding was excellent, with a starter of Greek salad and a meat meze, the main course was lamb cooked on a spin outside, with vegetables, and potatoes. Then, for dessert, there were fruit plates and plenty of wedding cake. The food was so delicious that everyone commented on how good it was and how much they had enjoyed it.

The Mediterranean food served in this restaurant is always fresh and cooked by a chef who has years and years of experience making these traditional dishes. The atmosphere there is wonderful and relaxing, with a regular crowd of people who visit. Everybody is made to feel welcome and like they are a part of the family. If anyone was looking for recommendations for places to eat when visiting the island, I would not hesitate to send them there.

IELTS speaking part 2 cue card example and answer

Model Answer

I’d like to talk about a small business idea that I have been considering for a while and that is to open a craft cafe. I would like to rent a property in a popular area where I live, with enough space for a coffee bar, tables inside, a workshop in the back and an outside seating area. This would be a creative environment, for people to come and spend time with their friends or on their own to make something and have a coffee.

The creative space inside would have a workshop area where classes could be held regularly, with those attending paying a small fee. Materials would be available for people to knit, crochet or draw. People could donate craft items too, on a sharing basis, for example, if you bring something to share, you can take something in return. This would encourage people to meet fellow makers and make new friends in the community. So many people now are into crafting that there has been a surge in craft classes in local communities. This cafe would be a  dedicated craft cafe space.

I would like to start this business in the next five years if possible, starting out with a small property and then possibly expanding into a larger space if the profits allow. The next step would be to create a learning centre next to the workshop so that people could also learn other skills and attend courses there. I have not yet had the time or money to start this business, as quite a lot of money would be needed to rent and renovate a space. I am still looking for the ‘perfect’ property to do this in, as I have in my thoughts somewhere that is small and looks like it would fit into an old English village.

I would like to open a craft cafe so that fellow minded people could meet up and share their skills and knowledge with other crafters. People in the community with various skills could run workshops so that people who wish to learn something new have the opportunity. In my area, there are no classes like this or any opportunity for people to learn new skills in crafts. Bringing people together in this way is a grat idea and would certainly be welcomed by the large crafting community that already exists.

Feedback

This is a high-level answer, as there are concrete words being used to tell a story (the story behind the craft cafe idea). Words and phrases are used to describe thoughts and feelings. The bullet points have been covered with the extra information given (examples), which extends the answer. The answer also includes collocations and the correct use of pronouns.

IELTS speaking part 2 cue card describe a photograph that you remember
IELTS speaking part 2 cue card example with model answer

Model Answer

I want to tell you about one of my favourite photographs, it was taken by me a few years ago when my parents came to visit the island. They were on holiday for a couple of weeks and wanted to visit various places, including Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Mon Repos and the famous Town. They also wanted to return to the quaint little fishing village of Kassiopi, which is a lovely place to go to get a coffee and watch the boats come in and go out.

I took a photograph of my parents enjoying a traditional Greek dessert called Baklava. I used my canon camera with a 50mm lens, so the photograph is very detailed, with great lighting. They both look so happy and are obviously enjoying themselves. The baklava in the photograph is dripping in honey, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. My father has his piece of baklava on his fork, raised about to put it into his mouth and he is smiling, my mother is laughing at him. We were sitting at a cafe near to the water, with the sea and the boats in the background.

I remember this photograph as we had a great day out in that small fishing village, wandering around the small shopping lined streets and looking at the tourist merchandise for sale. We checked out the boats that were docked, taking an interest in the speedboats and small yachts that were moored there. You often see super yachts around the island or expensive speedboats that look like they are out of a movie. We then sat and had some refreshments in the waterside cafe and ordered some sweet traditional desserts. Everyone was happy, laughing and in high spirits that day. I know that they enjoyed themselves immensely and when they visit, they alsways ask to go to Kassiopi and have a walk around.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Introduction

IELTS Cue Card 8 – A Problem That Affects The Environment

⚡ TL;DR

A complete model answer and preparation guide for this IELTS Speaking cue card topic. Includes key vocabulary, follow-up questions, and examiner-approved response strategies.

Originally published September 2017. Last reviewed 3 July 2026.

Model Answer

I’d like to talk about the litter problem that we have where I live. When you walk around your village, go into the town, visit monuments or any places really, there is always litter lying on the ground. Even though there are many rubbish bins in places that you pass, people still leave litter on the streets or anywhere they want. This is a huge problem for the environment, as animals can hurt themselves and obviously it looks terrible.

The main reason that this is such an issue, is that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of tourists that come here every year, leaving litter. The bins provided in many areas are quite small, often overflowing so much that there is a huge pile of growing litter right next to the bin. They are not emptied often enough in busy areas, causing a problem. this leads to stray animals inspecting the contents of the trash and makes the area look bad. The litter left behind in some areas, like next to ancient ruins or monuments is just carelessness from tourists. I have seen broken glass, bottles, papers and coffee cups all next to a very well known monument here on the island. I have collected litter to put into the bin, especially if it is broken glass and my dog is with me.

The people on the island are always complaining about the litter problem here, with demonstrations in town. The litter is not collected, sometimes for over a week and rubbish bins start to overflow. Sometimes the garbage collectors go on strike, leaving mountains of rubbish growing every day. This is a real issue, especially with so many tourists visiting the island each year.

To solve this problem, the authorities should provide more bins in built up areas and empty the trash daily. They could also put more signs up saying not to litter and perhaps introduce strict fines for those who do, for example, in the UK there are hefty fines for littering. They need to make people aware that it is not allowed and wrong to leave litter anywhere, making the place look untidy and harming the environment. If the local authorities can make some changes in the short term, then the whole of the island environment and famous well known areas will benefit in the long term.

Feedback

This is a high-level answer, as there are concrete words being used to describe the problem. Words and phrases are used to describe thoughts and feelings about this problem. The bullet points have been covered with the extra information given (examples), which extends the answer. A solution is offered to combat this problem, with good use of vocabulary and collocations.

Describe an activity that you like to do in your free time after work or study

You should say –

  • What you do
  • Where you do it
  • When you do it
  • Who you do it with
  • And explain why you like to do this activity.

You will have to talk about the topic for 1-2 minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say and may make notes during that time.

Model Answer

I’d like to talk about walking my dog, we recently rescued a dog who was found by our neighbour by the side of the road. At the time he was only around 4 weeks old and quite ill, he was covered in fleas, had a belly full of worms and various skin conditions. He soon became healthy after many vet visits and now has grown into a large healthy dog, who has a routine of walks at certain times every day to burn off his energy. We started his walking routine slowly when he was little, as he was scared of the park at first. He soon loved to go there and looks really happy with the freedom he has to be able to venture out on his own.

I normally walk him around my village in the morning before work for around 45 minutes. Then in the afternoons after work at around 7 pm we will visit the park, so he can run free. He loves to be able to run around and explore the park, meeting up with other dogs and playing. He enjoys running after people jogging and cycling, showing them that he can go faster than them. He also likes to have his photograph taken with tourists when they are posing next to monuments in the park. I really enjoy seeing him look so happy when he has the freedom off the leash to run as fast as he can and to play with other dogs.

In my opinion, walking with my dog is great exercise, as we walk together (or run) daily for at least 2 hours. This is good for both of us, as he can burn off his energy and I can also keep fit. I also think that getting away from my desk and breathing in the fresh air is beneficial for my health and to clear my mind. It helps to keep my mental health in check, by taking these walks and having the time to think about things. I will continue to walk my dog every day, taking him with me to various locations on the island, as he also enjoys the beach and the town park, but these areas are busy in the summer months, so he will have to wait until the autumn.

Model Answer

I’d like to talk about my idea of a perfect vacation. As I live in Spain, I normally like to visit cities when I go on vacation, to soak up some different types of culture. Of course, there is plenty of culture here on this lovely little piece of paradise, but every now and again I need to leave and visit a busy bustling city. My perfect vacation would probably lead me to New York.

I have visited New York once and I can’t wait to return, the noise, the lights and the non-stop energy of the city makes it a great place to go. I would visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and The Met Museum to see both traditional and modern art, before planning my way through the city. Visiting Central Park, 5th Avenue to window shop, Times Square, The Rockefeller Centre and even the Statue of Liberty. There are other places I would like to visit, which include the Natural History Museum, the sex and the city tour and to see a Broadway show. I would also like to see the restaurant close to Times Square that is decorated like a 1950’s diner, where the waiters and waitresses get up on the tables to sing. I have heard they are all amazing and the experience is one that you will never forget.

When I visit again, I will take my husband as he has never been before. he really enjoys travelling and seeing new places, he enjoys looking at famous architecture, so I know that he will want to visit the Empire State building and ground zero, where the twin towers used to be. We could also sample the food whilst in the city, with breakfast in art deco diners, lunch from small cafes in the park and dinner in a different place every night.

This would be my idea of a perfect vacation because it allows us to have a different lifestyle for a week, which is a refreshing change from the quiet, but stunning place we live in now. I like to feel inspired from my vacations, visiting places that give me ideas and make me feel energised. New York is such an amazing city that you can feel the buzz around you of people living their lives. Visiting a busy city like this, makes a vacation feel exciting and full of energy, which is ideal in my perspective.

I’d like to talk about how I like to travel to my parents home during the winter. I currently live in Spain and during the winter I like to travel home to visit my parents in the UK. They live in the North of England, so it is often very cold in the winter there. With temperatures getting below zero, you need to wear your warm clothes and make sure that you have the heating on when you are in the house. With living in Spain now, the temperatures in the winter are much warmer than in the UK. You can still sit outside for a coffee in December or January on a sunny day.

I like to visit my parents and in December it snows, with heavy thick snowflakes and a full pinkish, grey sky, the snow can get quite deep. I like to get dressed up in a big thick coat, woolly hat and scarf, put on my Wellington boots and go for a long walk in the snow. It is really pretty and awe inspiring to see everything covered in thick layers of white snow, with an eerie feeling too, as the streets are deserted and everything is quiet. Then after the walk when I return home again, I like to sit and drink tea or hot chocolate by the fire with the dogs and watch some English TV shows. They always have a good programme of viewing in December, with the run up to Christmas.

I really like to visit my parents home during the winter, not only to see them and spend time with them but to enjoy the winter weather. Going for long walks in the countryside or on the beach is really refreshing in the cold weather. You can feel like you have lots of energy after walking your dogs through a forest, so wrapped up in winter clothes so that only your face is exposed.

Being from somewhere that has a regular cold temperature with a vast difference in the seasons is great. I keep my winter wardrobe of a winter coat and wellington boots at their house, as I don’t really need them in Spain. The weather here is never as cold as there unless you travel to places that are high up in the mountains. Winter for me is never the same anywhere else, I always want to go home to get the full frosty experience.

IELTS Cue Card 4 – A Job That Is Considered Important In Your Country

I’d like to talk about a job that I think is very important for everyone all over the world and that is the role of people in the medical profession. Doctors, nurses and all of the specialists that make up the healthcare systems have such an important role in society. They heal, nurture and save the lives of many people on a daily basis. Without these professionals, many people would suffer and medicine would not be moving forward at the rate it is today.

Doctors and other people in the medical profession require years of training at university before getting ‘hands on’ training in hospitals or GP practices. Many years of study and training is required for the very skilled, often continuing to study all through their career. For example, surgeons who specialise in niche areas will continue to study and teach even after they are fully qualified. The type of people that want to be in the medical profession are those who want to help people, academic and motivated. Some choose this profession as a way to solidify their career prospects and know that once qualified, their careers will grow in strength, making them secure financially. They also have huge job satisfaction knowing that every day they are helping others.

The skilled workers in the medical profession can help the country by providing a service that benefits the people who live there. By offering a good healthcare system, the country will be considered as a leader in government systems, with the quality of health care provided for free. Private medical care offered to those who can afford it is often supplied and uses doctors who specialise in certain areas, who work between all healthcare providers.

The role of doctors and nurses is really important in all areas of the profession, as society needs them. They are often overworked and underpaid for what they do, always giving and going that extra mile because they truly care for the well-being of others. In my opinion, society would crumble without this service and many people would not be taken care of or healed by those with the knowledge and skills to do so.

Describe and object that you own

I’d like to talk about my laptop, which is a high-end MacBook pro. I bought this laptop when I realise that my older MacBook and my iMac were both very slow and became a chore to use. I researched the Macs online before I decided to get the best choice for me and it was a really good choice. I use it every day for work and it is really fast and able to connect to many programmes simultaneously.

I mainly use my laptop at my desk when I work during the day, it connects to a larger monitor and I work between two screens. I love how versatile it is though, for example when I travel I can easily take it with me or if I am ill, I can work from my bed. If I had chosen a desktop iMac, I would have been restricted to the use of it, in one place only. Having a laptop makes like easier when you move around a lot for work. In my opinion, it is the best tool I have for my working day, it connects me to my email accounts, clients, students and various other sites. I can also complete video calls effortlessly with the built in HD camera. I’m quite protective over my laptop and would never loan it to anyone to use it, as I use it so often myself, because It is my most prized possession.

If for any reason my laptop was not working, it would be very difficult for me to complete my work and so it is a very important object for me to be able to survive and complete my tasks. It is also a great learning tool when paired with internet use, I can research and learn a great number of things daily. It has quite a high monetary value which means that it is important as a possession but also as something that I covet because of how much I use it and need it to run my daily activities. Without it, I would be lost and I would be straight down to the apple store to get a replacement.
