Speaking Part 1 – TV

⚡ TL;DR

Originally published August 2017. Last reviewed 3 July 2026.

In this post, you will see one of the most common IELTS speaking topics (TV) and sample answers.

Please remember that in the actual test you should give honest answers and talk about your own experiences, thoughts, feelings and opinions. Do not try to memorise answers, as the examiners will probably be able to guess and you will lose marks.

However, you are able to make up information to extend your answers, but be sure that you are confident when speaking about the chosen topic and that it is believable.

TIP >> Each answer should be at least 2-3 sentences long.

TIP >> Listen carefully to the question so that you answer in the correct tense.

TIP >> When answering a yes/no question – answer then give your reasons for your answer. You must extend your answer to gain more marks.

TIP >> Just relax and think of it as a regular conversation you are having, make eye contact and be positive.

Take a look at the questions and sample answers below on the topic of ‘TV‘ >>

Q: Do you often watch TV?

A: Yes, perhaps for an hour or two most nights, depending on my schedule. I like to catch up on TV shows I am watching or I might watch a movie before going to sleep.

Q: What types of TV programme are popular in your country?

A: I think that soap operas are very popular, with a central love story. There is often betrayals and deceit as the main obstacles in the way of the main characters coming together.

Q: What (types of) programmes did you watch when you were a child?

A: I used to watch teen dramas, like Beverly Hills 90210, Baywatch and Heartbreak High. I also like watching some Australian soap operas also that were popular, for example, Neighbours and Home and Away.

Q: What’s your favourite TV program?

A: I have so many! One of my favourites though is British drama Peaky Blinders, about a family in Birmingham in the 1920’s. It has excellent actors, good writing and lots of action. I also like the TV shows Vikings, Game of Thrones and Reign. Period dramas are the best!

Q: When do you usually watch TV?

A: Late at night in the summer months maybe for an hour, but in the winter months I watch a few hours because I am in the house more often.

Q: Do you think TV has changed in the past few decades?

A: Yes, I think that it has become more accessible due to smart TV’s being connected to Netflix, Amazone Prime and other providers. Netflix can be connected to any device, so watching your favourite shows is easy. There are so many TV shows now that have good actors and are well written.

Q: Has television changed your life in any way?

A: It is something that I enjoy, but I couldn’t say it has changed my life. It is something that is there to pass the time, like reading. I like to watch TV to relax and sometimes as background noise if I am cooking.

Q: Do you use emails?

A: Yes of course! I use email every day to communicate with friends, family and work. I rely on it for work, talking to students, clients and booking appointments. Without it, I would not be able to do very much!

Q: Are they popular in your country?

A: They are popular all over the world, as the digital revolution has taken over. People rely on emails to communicate, to send and receive information.

Q: Do you think they are going to replace letters in the future? Why?

A: I think so because it is an instant way of getting information. People do not have the time now to wait 3-5 days for a letter to be delivered (or longer) so use emails frequently.

Q: Are you interested in robots? Why?

A: Yes, I know they are being developed right now to be intelligent and read about them in the news so that they can communicate and perform tasks. I read an article recently about how two robots developed their own language of code, which was interesting.

Q: Do you like robots to work at your home?

A: Not really, after reading the article about the google robots communicating in a language they had developed. If they can do that without human programming it makes you think about what else they could do!

Q: Do you want to take a car which robot is the driver?

A: No, I think that it would be difficult for a robot to navigate roads when they do not know what to expect. driving situations are always different, things happen that you cannot predict.

Q: Will robots replace human beings in the workplace completely?

A: No, in my opinion, I think that robots may be able to complete some jobs but obviously not all. How can they be programmed to think like a human? They are not human and do not have the compassion and humanity that we need for most jobs in society.

Q: Do you enjoy using technology?

A: Yes, it makes my working life really easy, I use my computer every day. I love that it is convenient and that everything can be accessed online.

Q: Do you use the Internet for your studies?

A: Yes, I do research online, reading articles from trusted resources. However, there is a lot of information out there, so you need to be able to separate the good from the bad.

Q: Do you have your own computer?

A: Yes, I have and I use it for hours every day, it is very high speed which I love and it makes my working day feel easy and uncomplicated. I rely on my computer a lot, so it was a really good investment.

Q: Do you work or study?

A: I work at the moment but I continue my studies at the same time. I continue to learn through courses and gain new qualifications every year, this means my knowledge is always up to date.

Q: What do you do?

A: I am a teacher and a freelance writer. I write for various people around the world, blogging and creating copy for websites and social media accounts.

Q: Why did you choose this kind of work?

A: It is interesting and allows me to be creative daily. Teaching is a fantastic way to help people to achieve their goals and writing allows me to pursue other avenues that lead to my work being seen by a wider audience.

Q: Do you enjoy your work?

A: Yes I do, it is always exciting to meet new students and to help them on their learning journey. Writing is also a fun way to let my imagination free and to research topics that interest me, like interior design, architecture and fine art.

Q: What are your responsibilities?

A: I am responsible for seeing that students meet their desired targets and that they improve under my tuition. I am also responsible for many websites, blog ideas, SEO, social media and other copy related tasks.

Q: What are the advantages of having your own business rather than working for someone else?

A: The benefits of having your own business are that you are able to make the decisions, do whatever you want to do and take responsibility for everything. This also means that you can ultimately be responsible for all of the major agreements.

Q: What do you like/dislike about your job?

A: The thing I like most about my job is being able to help people achieve their goals. I also like the flexibility, as I am responsible for my own schedule. I don’t like the number of hours I sometimes work, but it can be necessary.

Q: Is your subject very challenging (or difficult) to study?

A: Yes, it can be at times, as it is very demanding. I studied English and creative writing at university, before moving into gaining teaching qualifications, then management. The most difficult part of the degree was remembering lots and lots of information.

Q: Is that a very popular subject to study in your country?

A: Yes, many people want to study English and creative writing, with views of becoming journalists, teachers or authors. There are many people who are very talented writers currently studying those subjects.

Q: What do you do when you have a difficulty with your studies?

A: I normally take a break, as it helps to go for a walk somewhere green, like the park to clear my head and to think about what I am working on. I like to take a step back, consider, plan and then implement, returning to study with a fresh mind.

Q: How did you learn science at school?

A: I had three separate science classes and often completed practical activities in groups. I also attended lectures outside of school and went on school trips.

Q: Why did you choose …as your major?

A: I chose English and creative writing because I wanted to explore my writing abilities. I was always very good at English during school, so wanted to progress further.

Q: What do you like about your major?

A: The thing I like best about the subject is that I can be very creative. It has allowed me to create written pieces on a number of topics, I have had work published on various websites and blogged for high profile clients.

Q: What’s more important when studying – the student or teacher?

A: In my opinion, I think both; the student has to take responsibility for their own learning, being motivated and enthusiastic. Whereas, the teacher has to nourish the student’s talents and guide them as much as possible.

Q: Do you have a favourite teacher?

A: Yes, my art teacher was excellent when I was at school, she always helped me and was very inspiring. I always felt as though she pushed me to become a better painter and she supported me at all times.

Q: What kinds of teachers do you like?

A: Those who support the students, are equal and fair and see the students as individuals. It is important for them to see the students as they are and how to help them reach their potential.

Q: What are the qualities of a good teacher?

A: There are many, for example; a good listener, supportive, knowledgeable, dependable and authoritative.

Q: Do you think teachers should be angry at students or not?

A: I think that depends on the circumstances, for instance, if a student has behaved terribly to another student, then yes. But not in general, there would have to be a reason to be angry with them.

Q: Do you like strict teachers?

A: I think that depends on the subject, for example, an English teacher might be quite strict and their teaching methods may work well with that subject. On the other hand, an art or drama teacher may be friendly and more open minded as the subject demands.

Q: What’s the difference between young and old teachers?

A: Young teachers are full of ideas and enthusiasm, ready to try new things and work really hard to meet targets and progress. Older teachers may not be as motivated and enthusiastic, depending on their responsibility list and time available. They can become jaded and cynical over time.

Q: Do you like to eat out?

A: Absolutely! I love going to a restaurant either in town or by the sea. There are so many restaurants that are by the sea here in Corfu, that it is impossible not to go!

Q: Where do you like to go?

A: I like to visit restaurants by the sea that serve fresh fish. My husband’s godparents own a fantastic fish taverna, that we visit regularly and it is situated on a private beach with fantastic waters for swimming.

Q: Are there any restaurants you can recommend in your hometown?

A: In the city where I grew up there are many restaurants serving various cuisine from around the world. Unfortunately, the Greek restaurants there do not serve the same quality of food as you can find in Greece. So when I am there I like to go to Yo Sushi, the experience is a good as the food itself!

Q: Can you tell me about a memorable experience you had at a restaurant?

A: It was my mom’s birthday and friends and family were at the beachside taverna for a Greek night, with dancing and live music. We had organised a surprise cake for my mom and when it came out she was so happy. The night was one big happy occasion, filled with good food, cake and of course traditional dancing!

Q: Do you think vacations are becoming more and more important?

A: Yes, I think that many people are working longer hours and have more stress than ever placed upon them. taking a break is necessary to unwind and recharge so that they can let go of the stress and focus on their own well-being.

Q: If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

A: I would like to visit a pretty place with snow, lots and lots of snow, somewhere like Canada or maybe even in the mountains in Greece during the winter months. I would like to go skiing, try snowboarding and stay in a well-decorated log cabin, with a large real fireplace.

Q: Is there any part of your country where it doesn’t rain much?

A: It rains in my current country quite often during the winter months. It is a small place so the rain normally hits all parts of the island.

Q: Does it rain a lot in your hometown?

A: In Newcastle, it rains a lot, throughout the year, even in the summer months. the weather in the north of England usually includes lots of rain, cloud and not much sun.

Q: Can you remember any time when it rained particularly heavily in your hometown?

A: Yes, a few years ago the rain was so bad that many areas were completely flooded, with the banks of the river breaking. Many cars were lost and people had to be rescued from their homes.

Q: Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?

A: yes sometimes, depending on the severity of the rain and if it leads to flooding. Some roads may have to be closed due to floods, so diversions will be put into effect.

Q: Do you like the sunshine? Why?

A: Yes I do! The sunshine can make you feel happy, when you wake up and the day is bright it can give you positive energy.

Q: What do you like to do in the sunshine/ or on a sunny day?

A: Depending on how hot it is, I like to walk my dog in the park, but if it is hot, then I like to visit the beach and go swimming to cool down.

Q: Do you like going outside at the weekends on sunny days?

A: Absolutely! if the temperature is warm and the sun is out, I like to be outside, to go for a walk with my dog or to sit outside for a coffee in town. However, if the temperature is really high, then I prefer to stay indoors, to protect myself from the sun.

Q: What’s the weather like today?

A: At the moment we are having a heatwave, so the temperature is really high. I have been avoiding the sun and going out to run errands in the late afternoons.

Q: What’s the weather (usually) like in your hometown?

A: In the city where I grew up, the temperatures are normally low, as it is in the north of England. Even in the summer months, the temperatures reach between 16-24 degrees. It rains a lot and there are many cloudy days.

Q: What’s your favourite weather? (Why?)

A: I prefer warm days at around 24/25 degrees with clear blue skies and the sun. This is good for walking my dog and to enjoy the outdoors without being too uncomfortable.

Q: Do you like snow? (Why?)

A: I love the snow! There is something fascinating about being in the heavy snow when the sky is full and you have to wear many layers of clothing. I enjoy it because it is so beautiful and makes walking and playing in it lots of fun.

Q: Do you watch the weather forecasts?

A: I don’t follow forecasts on the TV but I do check a weather app I have on my phone to see the temperatures every day and to check the humidity.

Q: Does the weather ever affect what you do?

A: Yes, plans change according to the weather, for instance, if there is a heavy downpour I will not be able to walk my dog or to go shopping in town.

Q: Do you like swimming?

A: I really love to go swimming, especially in the sea on a hot day. There are so many great places for swimming where I live, that it is easy to go every day in the summer months.

Q: How often do you swim?

A: I try to go swimming every day or at least three times per week. This allows me to do some exercise in the water which is good for my overall health.

Q: Do you like to go swimming on holiday?

A: I used to before I moved to a Greek island. Now it is normal behaviour to go swimming in the summer months nearly every day. I prefer to swim in the sea, rather than the pool as it is cleaner. There are clear, crisp waters in beautiful surroundings close to our house, which can be easily accessed by car.

Q: Should everyone learn swimming? Why?

A: I think it is a good skill to have, as not only can it benefit your health and overall fitness levels, it can also be a safety skill. Knowing how to swim is important, in case of accidents in water – it could save your life. People should learn when they are young, for enjoyment and for health.

Q: What activities would you do if you were spending some leisure time at a beach or near the ocean?

A: If I was at the beach I would play volleyball, go swimming and perhaps hire a jet ski. Travelling through the waters on a jet ski is a lot of fun and a good way to explore caves, coves and small bays.

Q: Why do some people like water sports?

A: Some people love to be in the ocean and get an adrenaline rush from water skiing, jet ski and surfing. Watersports attract people who like a challenge, an adventure and something that gives them an exhilarating outdoor experience.

Q: Do you think the government should invest money in developing facilities for water sports?

A: In my opinion, the government should put more funding into health care and education first before committing expenses to watersports. On the other hand, programs could be implemented to develop areas for water sports, which could involve the community and provide new experiences.

Q: What sports do you like? (Why?)

A: I used to enjoy classes like Zumba and body combat but now really enjoy swimming and running. Swimming and running are great ways to stay fit as they allow me to experience nature, as well as exercise.

Q: What sports are most popular in your country?

A: In the country, I currently live in, football and volleyball are really popular. There are many local football teams and volleyball tournaments are held once a month in the summer season.

Q: Are boys and girls good at the same sports?

A: I think boys seem more passionate about certain sports like football and rugby, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are better than girls. If a person is dedicated to a sport and has the skills needed to be a success, I don’t think it matters if they are a boy or a girl.

Q: What sports do children prefer?

A: Children like any activities that involve running around and using up their energy. They like sports involving balls, like football, rounders and netball. They also like swimming, playing in the water and being outdoors.

Q: Do you like to do daily exercise? (Why?/Why not?)

A: I exercise every day for at least thirty minutes, this includes walking, swimming or running. In my view, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, by exercising and moving the body as much as possible. This can help you to clear your mind and stay positive.

Take a look at the questions and sample answers below on the topic of ‘shopping‘ >>

Q: Do you like to read books?

A: Yes, I love to read and try to read as often as I can. I have an e-reader and have more than 600 books in my library.

Q: What type of books do you like to read?

A: Mostly romance, I am a huge fan of old English classic literature, like Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte. I also like to read modern romance, with Mills and Boon often slipping into my holiday reading list.

Q: Do you ever visit the library?

A: Not really, I used to when I was a student and as a teacher, but now it is so easy to buy books online and either have them delivered to your home or downloaded onto your e-reader. I am very forgetful, so always ended up with fines from the library for late returns!

Q: Do you prefer reading books or watching films?

A: I much prefer to read books, because I like to get lost in a story. It is a great way to fuel your imagination and to go somewhere else for a short period of time. You focus on the characters and the details given to you. Watching a movie does not often hold my attention in the same way.
