In this post, we will look at a problem/solution essay example from the IELTS writing task 2 test. Students often ask if the questions are repeated year after year and the answer is no, but the topics are. There are so many questions written each year, you may find your practice answering various questions on different topics. For example, you could write essays to answer questions about education or the environment, which benefits you because you learn vocabulary associated with those topics and develop ideas that can help you in your writing test.

Writing task 2 question

Many people consider that oil rigs and gas businesses offer different job prospects for countless workers whereas others worry about the detrimental effects on the environment.  This essay thinks that without strict monitoring from the government, oil and gas companies may abuse and harm the flora and fauna. Firstly, this essay will discuss the potential benefits of the oil and gas industry expanding and secondly, the damaging effect on the environment and lastly will suggest potential resolutions to solve the problem.

On the one hand, many investors want to expand oil and gas companies for this is a very lucrative business.  This has made Saudi Arabia one of the richest countries, for they provide the major oil and gas supplies to the entire world and because of it, their economy booms and prospers which the whole country enjoys. In addition, it has also offered many job opportunities not only for the people but for nearby countries including the Philippines.  For instance, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration in 2016 reported that over 1 million Filipino workers went out of the country to work in an oil and gas company located in the middle east.

On the other hand, the process of producing gas and manufacturing oil is a very strenuous task.  Several machines drill the ocean floors or vast areas in the desserts to look for oil deposits, which more often than not can destroy the surroundings. It can also affect some of the creatures that thrive in the affected environment for their habitats are being destroyed. The atmosphere is not spared, for the oil and gas companies produce major air pollutants that can harm both the nature and the health of its workers. For example, a study by the World Wildlife Fund in 2015 revealed that 20 percent of the ocean floor of the Pacific Ocean had been destroying due to oil explorations.

In my opinion, I believe that a potential answer to this could be that different government officials should work together in order to construct laws that provide protection to the environment against abusive oil and gas businesses. They should also have strict policies and meticulous implementation of these laws so that companies are aware of the major consequences.  For instance,  The Department of Environment and the Natural Resources in the Philippines in 2010  revealed that 30 oil explorations in the Philippines sea had been cancelled due to the probable detrimental effects on the coral reefs in the area.

In conclusion, although oil and gas companies provide countless jobs for employees we should also consider the effects on our environment because the result of this is irreversible.

IELTS writing task 2

Numerous progressing nations encounter massive complications with the condition of their water and air from both manufacturers and commercial factories. Firstly, this essay will discuss the issue of water and air contamination and secondly, it will suggest answers to this.

On the one hand, abuse of the environment is one of the main dilemmas in the world today.  Some industrial companies toss their chemical and garbage wastes into nearby bodies of water like rivers, lakes and the ocean, which affects the creatures and plants in the water. Red tides are often encountered and because of this, the availability of some seafood is affected. In addition, exposure to different kinds of diseases brought about by both water and air pollution increases rapidly. For example, a study by The WHO reported that in 2016 almost 80% of the water surrounding The Philippines was contaminated with biochemicals that had been leaked from industrial companies.

On the other hand, this may be the consequence of a country trying to develop its economy but there are answers to the problems. Strengthening the laws to protect the environment should be one of them because as long as there are consequences, they would not commit a crime like illegal dumping. The government should inflict severe fines and jail terms to those who are found to be destroying the environment with their toxic waste. For example, The Environmental Department in the Philippines reported in 2017 that 90% of industrial companies who were found to be over the limit of waste removal were fined heavily and closed.

In conclusion, the destruction of our natural resources and increased exposure to health risks are the main problems. The government and the companies involved should work together in order to solve these difficulties.

Physicians advise their older patients to conduct physical workouts frequently but many of them do not follow the guidance given. Firstly, this essay will discuss the main cause of the problem and secondly will give suggestions on how to inspire them to have more regular activity.

On the one hand, the main cause of older people not completing enough exercise is that they are often suffering from various aches and pains within their body. Older people possibly associate exercise with strenuous activity, whereas tailored programs for their age group are more likely to be given. Having a weaker body can also contribute to the root of the problem because they are afraid they might injure themselves while doing certain movements. For example, DOH Philippines reported in 2017, that 7 out of 10 geriatric causes of hospitalizations are because of accidents involving strenuous activities.

On the other hand, proper instruction from experienced instructors could inspire older people to exercise. Wushu and Zumba gold are now famous amongst old people because they offer light movements to music and are fun group activities. By attending group classes with friends this can also encourage them to see it as more of a social meeting. For instance, a survey conducted by Workout magazine reported in 2016 that 75% of women aged 60+ joined Zumba gold classes instead of having a one to one personal trainer.

In conclusion, older people should be encouraged to move their bodies, with light, fun and group exercises. Many of them may feel inspired to follow a regular fitness program with encouragement from peers.

Numerous ex-convicts re-offend soon after they have been freed from jail. This essay will first discuss why this is happening and secondly the negative impact it has on society.

On the one hand, the primary cause of ex-prisoners committing crimes as soon as they are out of prison is because they think that this could be the fastest way to earn money. Having a criminal record means that it is hard to find employment, which means that ex-cons cannot find suitable jobs. Most employers would be very hesitant to hire someone who has a criminal record, even though the person might have the right skills for the position. For example, an ABC 5 documentary in 2016 reported that 90% of employers would not hire an employee if they had committed criminal offences.

On the other hand, this has a detrimental effect on society, because new offences will be committed and the taxpayers will keep paying for these criminals. This will also indicate the need to have bigger prisons to accommodate prisoners, which furthermore affects the budget of a city. If more prisons are required, taxes will rise and the community will pay for these people to stay incarcerated. For example, in 2016, the Caloocan City municipality reported that they allocated 80 million pesos to extend their city jails, and this was funded by taxpayers.

In conclusion, the lack of opportunities for ex-convicts to restart their lives is the reason why they tend to commit the same mistakes. The effect is immense not only for the individual but for the whole country as well, for this can affect the economic stability.

Take a look at the IELTS Essay Writing Task 2 example on Transport below:

Some people believe that using a bicycle as your main form of transport has a lot of advantages whereas others think it has many disadvantages. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Many consider that there are a lot of benefits in riding a bike while others think that there are many drawbacks. In my view, I think that there are more pros than cons. Firstly, this essay will discuss the value of using a bicycle and secondly, the detrimental effects of bike riding.

On the one hand, the main advantage of using a bike as your main mode of transportation is that it is very good exercise. It is known to be a great way to burn calories, as well as toning your muscles. This way of travelling can not only be environmentally friendly but help people to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to have consistent exercise during the day. For instance, an article by Health First Magazine in 2016 revealed that daily bike riding is one of the ways health trainers promote shedding excess pounds.

On the other hand, the primary disadvantage of cycling is that it can be dangerous at times. Cyclists often forget to use protective garments that can shield them during unfortunate accidents and as a result, they receive severe injuries. Since cyclists can easily make their way through busy streets they are more prone to causing road accidents because some drivers may not see them. For example, a study by the Manila Traffic Bureau in 2014 reported that 50% of road accidents in Manila involved an altercation between a cyclist and a driver.

In my opinion, I believe that riding a bike has its own set of benefits. Owning a bicycle can help to protect the environment for there are no carbon emissions produced when riding it. Bicycles offer an environmentally friendly way of getting around. For instance, a study by the World Wildlife Fund in 2015 revealed that if most people chose to ride a bike while going to work, this could decrease air pollutants by almost 50%.

In conclusion, bike riding definitely has its advantages. Many people should own a bike for this is an effective way to improving one’s health and at the same time can assist in protecting the environment.

Take a look at the IELTS essay Writing Task 2 example on Communication below >>

Social media has replaced the traditional methods of communicating and people use more and more of social media to communicate and to follow news and events. Some people think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your opinion with example.

Mobile communication including the use of social media has substituted the usual ways of interacting and being updated about current events. This essay believes that the advancement of social communication is more advantageous rather than a burden.  Firstly, this essay will discuss the benefits of using social media as a tool and secondly the detrimental effects of having these apps in our lives.

On the one hand, the main advantage of using social media as a communication tool to message friends and keep up to date with current news and events is that you can easily access this information at any time on your mobile device. Using news apps means that you can read about events as they happen in real-time, as well as write comments on news articles. This way of learning about news and interacting with it has evolved with the increasing use of social apps. For example, the BBC news reported in 2017 that 90% of readers use the app to read news and comment on articles via their Facebook page.

On the other hand,  the primary disadvantage of using social media to learn about news and events is that it has been used to spread fake news which disseminates the wrong information. Fake reporting of celebrity deaths, bomb scares and government legislation has been widespread and shared on social media apps like Facebook and Twitter. For instance, a news report about the death of US actor Sylvester Stallone in 2017 went viral on Facebook and later turned out to be a fake news story.

In my opinion, I believe that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages because of how easy it is to use social media to share information with others. Traditional methods of hearing about the latest news are long outdated now that it is easy to share stories via social media apps. You can instantly share a news story with friends on Facebook or Twitter. For example, in my own experience, I regularly use Facebook to read news from the BBC, New York Times and The Economist, sharing articles with friends via the messenger app or into their newsfeed.

In conclusion, the advancement of social media has more benefits than drawbacks for this is the easiest way of sharing information and connecting different people around the world.
