⚡ TL;DRProcess diagram questions ask you to describe how something works or how something is made, step by step. Use the passive voice, sequencing language (first, then, subsequently, finally), and describe every stage without skipping any. Unlike data charts, process diagrams have no trends — focus on the sequence.

Two Types of Process

Natural processes: How something occurs in nature (e.g. the water cycle, how a volcano erupts). No human agent — use the passive voice exclusively.

Manufacturing processes: How something is made or produced (e.g. how chocolate is manufactured). Involves human actions — passive voice is still the standard.

How to Structure Your Response

Introduction: Paraphrase the question — state what the diagram shows and how many stages are involved.

Overview: Summarise the process in 2 sentences — identify the starting point, end point, and any notable features (e.g. cyclical nature, number of stages, key transformations).

Body 1: Describe the first half of the process, stage by stage.

Body 2: Describe the second half, linking stages with sequencing language.

⚠️ Do not skip stages. Unlike data charts where you select key features, process diagrams require you to describe every single stage shown. Skipping a stage is penalised under Task Achievement.
